We will all laugh at gilded butterflies

The quotation is from Act V Scene 3 of King Lear, the last scene of the play. Lear and Cordelia have been captured by the English forces after their defeat in battle. Cordelia wants to confront her sisters. Lear says:

"No, no, no, no! Come, let's away to prison.
We two alone will sing like birds i' th' cage.
When thou dost ask me blessing, I'll kneel down
And ask of thee forgiveness. So we'll live,
And pray, and sing, and tell old tales, and laugh
At gilded butterflies
, and hear poor rogues
Talk of court news; and we'll talk with them too-
Who loses and who wins; who's in, who's out-
And take upon 's the mystery of things,
As if we were God's spies; and we'll wear out,
In a wall'd prison, packs and sects of great ones
That ebb and flow by th' moon."

Lear is focusing on what they will do to pass their time in prison, that they can enjoy themselves with simple childlike pleasures like singing and telling old tales. He says they can listen to what happens in court without caring about it, because since he has recovered from his madness all of his anger at Goneril and Regan is gone. He just doesn't care about them any more. It is quite possible that the "gilded butterflies" are intended to be understood simply in a literal sense, as golden butterflies which are always pleasant to watch. That is quite consistent with the rest of the speech (unlike some of the interpretations which follow)

"Gilded butterflies" could generally mean someone overdressed or overly fancy in order to appear more than they are, like a courtier. Such courtiers are the "great ones that ebb and flow by th' moon"

Lear could be comparing his avaricious daughters to gilded butterflies, appearing to be valuable and beautiful on the outside, but are mere whimsical and insubstantial inside. A further overtone is in one meaning of "gilded", which is "covered in blood", an obvious metaphor for violence or death. Laughing at the above would be a form of derision. (Is this consistent with the rest of the speech?)

Meaning of Guided: Today's meaning is "covered with gold." "Gilded" in archaic usage meant "to smear with blood." (Source: Merriam Webster Online).

Note: A butterfly is already something of great beauty and functionality. Gilding it - that is, gold-plating it - is an example of human folly, an example of human arrogance in thinking that gilding a butterfly makes it better when in fact, it would destroy both its great natural beauty and its ability to fly. Like applying layers of makeup to an already beautiful woman, obscuring her natural beauty, Lear recognizes the idiocy of this, and thus can refer to laughing at this sort of thing. And of course, the "gilded butterflies" themselves can refer either to his own daughters or others in the court, who, in their natural state may well be beautiful human beings, but now, being "gilded" only look good to those who don't know better, to those who like the artificial beauty of the *appearance* of gold. And gilding also means the butterflies can no longer fly. They can no longer really function. They can only sit there, doing nothing. And, on yet another level of this metaphor, let's not forget that gilding is nothing but a thin gold-leafing, thus making it literally worth almost nothing. A gilded butterfly only looks like solid gold. It is not. And those who know better, like King Lear finally, can laugh at this kind of stupidity.
(So, this would be the opposite of the first answer above, in which gilding is said to make an insubstantial thing more beautiful. Which it can, but Shakespeare chose something already naturally beautiful to be gilded, instead of something not, for example, a rat...)

Another comment:
Used transf. for To smear (with blood). Common in 16-17th c "Shakespeare John II. i. 316 Their Armours that march'd hence so siluer bright Hither returne all gilt with French~mens blood."

I would actually think that the reason we would be laughing is because a butterfly covered in gold most likely will not be able to fly. This could be a reference to the pursuit of wealth, in the sense that it destroys true nature...
"gild" in in Shakespeare's time (dictionary 1300-50; ME gilden, OE -gyldan; akin to gold) meant something that was gold. Something gilded was something dipped in gold, or accented with gold. Butterflies in most of the world, as well as in England during Shakespeare's time, represented the human soul, especially those human souls waiting to pass through purgatory. If a butterfly is gilded, it is beautiful; but it is also weighed down by the gold since butterflies are very light. Therefore, it will not be able to fly, and we, the ungilded will laugh since they will not be able to fly to the world beyond (or heaven). Gold either represents evil and corruption, or success. This could mean that the people who are consumed by their want for money and their obsession with it, aka the rich, will be weighed down by the same thing that makes them "beautiful" to others.
Their gold will weigh them down spiritually, leaving the downtrodden on top come judgment day.

We will all laugh at gilded butterflies.
I believe that "guilded butterfles" refers to trying to improve something that is already beautiful.
Guilded also refers to a gold plating or any "adornment from the natural"
If you imagine a golden plated butterfly, it could only be less beautiful.

Washington Diaries 2014: What Should I Do in Washington DC

As a regular tourist of course u should see  Monuments and Memorials in Washington DC which are:
Since Washington, DC's monuments are spread out, it is hard to visit all of them on foot. At busy times, traffic and parking makes it difficult to visit the monuments by car. The best way to see all the monuments is to take a sightseeing tour. Many of the monuments are open late at night and their illumination makes nighttime a memorable time to visit them. Or you can walk like us. The all famous monument is close to each others so if u think it's enough to see some of them you can start with The World War II Memorial. than continue with the others you can see at the end of road....

This is the U.S. Supreme Court I guess... We had limited time so I never seen any interior of buildings and I have suspicions about I would if I even had time but outside of them pretty good too:)

I remember this square from the legendary speech of Martin Luther King: I have a dream...

Visit the White House and don't tag yourself with this building as White House. No man, this is not White House. This is  U.S. Capitol.

And this is White House: Yes it's small and No, We didn't see The President... And yes Capitol is cooler than White House. Years and years when the Aliens blow out this building we got sad for nothing:)

On the National Mall or near the river you will find statues and plaques on many street corners around the city.

One morning we went to the riverside for jogging. It was unbelievable too. U should really try this on. I took all of this pics just near the river. Weather, environment, nature, statues .. All of them incredible and made me think that like I'm in a European city...

And the streets... Georgetown, one of the oldest neighborhoods in Washington, DC, It has many of shops and restaurant that you can relief and eat quality. I really don't like to suggest any restaurant name cause they are closing and opening end visa versa but I'm pretty sure that u can find many.

And Port. Like every city which has  board to river or sea Washington has a beautiful port and Ferris wheel. Prefer night...

We went one of jazz bar and was pretty fine too.

I started to sick of museums but Crime Museum kinda interesting.

By the way u know I'm working at Microsoft or u learned just now but here is MS pics of me:) Washington Convention Center was and MS WPC Conference was epic... Ok may be not epic but its Ok:)

My blog

Peehhh...

I'm usually hiding that I have a blog from people I know but when I tell occasionally someone I think they would die to learn it's address. But guess, noone cares. I think I'm not as fun as I'm think:)

Neyse...

What about the ones who are your best friend once and suddenly they just give up... U can love somebodies or not but you can not just decide in the middle of the friendship or love and start to not love them, right? Ok when I say love it doesn't seems as right as I thought but may be in friendship... No... While I'm writing I noticed that yes you can decide. I'm just nonsense. Ok. Whatever...

Kavga etmek. Hahahah... Yazarken bile komik... Ama eğlenceli  olabilir.

So we decided that it's Ok to start not to love someone in the middle of the relationship, than what should be our next step. Should we just left them in the hell that they already live? Which never worked for my good... Or from now on at the moment that we felt the unkindness or an attitude make a scene, start a huge fight... Event writing this is funny but it can be fun:)

Why nobody challenged me on #icebucketchallenge ? The theory about I'm boring is getting closer to be a fact. Pehhh...
Ok, kitap dizi, film, karikaturden gidicez o zaman.

Then now it's turn to idea of how can we be more fun. First we should watch more comedy seriesi movies or read comedy books. Standups can be useful too:) And be with fun people. If you have some of them around you of course. I just noticed that I don't many... Ok stick with books and movies:)

Hemen altımdaki balkonun sahibi evde olmayınca daha alttaki balkon sahibi teyzeye "Hihi, kusura bakmayın, balkonunuza camaşırımız düştü, size zahmet, alabilir miyim" cümleleri ile komşuluk ilişkilerimi 0'dan 1'e geliştirdim, which me...ans lot.
Valla...

Neyse gelişme var. :)

Cause I'm Happyyy

Happiness is a habit – cultivate it.” ~ Elbert Hubbard

Happiness is one aspiration all people share. No one wants to be sad and depressed.

We’ve all seen people who are always happy – even amidst agonizing life trials. I’m not saying happy people don’t feel grief, sorrow or sadness; they just don’t let it overtake their life. The following are 21 things happy people make a habit of doing:

1. Appreciate Life
Be thankful that you woke up alive each morning. Develop a childlike sense of wonder towards life. Focus on the beauty of every living thing. Make the most of each day. Don’t take anything for granted. Don’t sweat the small stuff.

2. Choose Friends Wisely
Surround yourself with happy, positive people who share your values and goals. Friends that have the same ethics as you will encourage you to achieve your dreams. They help you to feel good about yourself. They are there to lend a helping hand when needed.

3. Be Considerate
Accept others for who they are as well as where they are in life. Respect them for who they are. Touch them with a kind and generous spirit. Help when you are able, without trying to change the other person. Try to brighten the day of everyone you come into contact with.

4. Learn Continuously
Keep up to date with the latest news regarding your career and hobbies. Try new and daring things that has sparked your interest – such as dancing, skiing, surfing or sky-diving.

5. Creative Problem Solving
Don’t wallow in self-pity. As soon as you face a challenge get busy finding a solution. Don’t let the set backs affect your mood, instead see each new obstacle you face as an opportunity to make a positive change. Learn to trust your gut instincts – it’s almost always right.
6. Do What They Love
Some statistics show that 80% of people dislike their jobs! No wonder there’s so many unhappy people running around. We spend a great deal of our life working. Choose a career that you enjoy – the extra money of a job you detest isn’t worth it. Make time to enjoy your hobbies and pursue special interests.

7. Enjoy Life
Take the time to see the beauty around you. There’s more to life than work. Take time to smell the roses, watch a sunset or sunrise with a loved one, take a walk along the seashore, hike in the woods etc. Learn to live in the present moment and cherish it. Don’t live in the past or the future.
8. Laugh
Don’t take yourself – or life to seriously. You can find humor in just about any situation. Laugh at yourself – no one’s perfect. When appropriate laugh and make light of the circumstances. (Naturally there are times that you should be serious as it would be improper to laugh.)

9. Forgive
Holding a grudge will hurt no one but you. Forgive others for your own peace of mind. When you make a mistake – own up to it – learn from it – and FORGIVE yourself.

10. Gratitude
Develop an attitude of gratitude. Count your blessings; All of them – even the things that seem trivial. Be grateful for your home, your work and most importantly your family and friends. Take the time to tell them that you are happy they are in your life.

11. Invest in Relationships
Always make sure your loved ones know you love them even in times of conflict. Nurture and grow your relationships with your family and friends by making the time to spend with them. Don’t break your promises to them. Be supportive.
12. Keep Their Word
Honesty is the best policy. Every action and decision you make should be based on honesty. Be honest with yourself and with your loved ones.

13. Meditate
Meditation gives your very active brain a rest. When it’s rested you will have more energy and function at a higher level. Types of meditation include yoga, hypnosis, relaxation tapes, affirmations, visualization or just sitting in complete silence. Find something you enjoy and make the time to practice daily.
14. Mind Their Own Business
Concentrate on creating your life the way you want it. Take care of you and your family. Don’t get overly concerned with what other people are doing or saying. Don’t get caught up with gossip or name calling. Don’t judge. Everyone has a right to live their own life the way they want to – including you.

15. Optimism
See the glass as half full. Find the positive side of any given situation. It’s there – even though it may be hard to find. Know that everything happens for a reason, even though you may never know what the reason is. Steer clear of negative thoughts. If a negative thought creeps in – replace it with a positive thought.

16. Love Unconditionally
Accept others for who they are. You don’t put limitations on your love. Even though you may not always like the actions of your loved ones – you continue to love them.

17. Persistence
Never give up. Face each new challenge with the attitude that it will bring you one step closer to your goal. You will never fail, as long as you never give up. Focus on what you want, learn the required skills, make a plan to succeed and take action. We are always happiest while pursuing something of value to us.

18. Be Proactive
Accept what can not be changed. Happy people don’t waste energy on circumstances beyond their control. Accept your limitations as a human being. Determine how you can take control by creating the outcome you desire – rather than waiting to respond.

19. Self Care
Take care of your mind, body and health. Get regular medical check ups. Eat healthy and work out. Get plenty of rest. Drink lots of water. Exercise your mind by continually energizing it with interesting and exciting challenges.

20. Self Confidence
Don’t try to be someone that you’re not. After all no one likes a phony. Determine who you are in the inside – your own personal likes and dislikes. Be confident in who you are. Do the best you can and don’t second guess yourself.
21. Take Responsibility
Happy people know and understand that they are 100% responsible for their life. They take responsibility for their moods, attitude, thoughts, feelings, actions and words. They are the first to admit when they’ve made a mistake.
Begin today by taking responsibility for your happiness. Work on developing these habits as you own. The more you incorporate the above habits into your daily lifestyle – the happier you will be.

Most of all: BE TRUE TO YOURSELF
